The 2012 population-based survey of HIV prevalence is the fourth in the series of national HIV prevalence surveys that have investigated HIV prevalence and behaviour. In 2002, a consortium consisting of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), Medical Research Council (MRC), Centre for AIDS Development, Research and Evaluation (CADRE) and Agence Nationale de Recherche sur le Sida (ANRS) constituted the first research team to conduct a national population-based survey of HIV prevalence in South Africa.
